US Senate Votes to End Impeachment Case Against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas

House Impeaches Mayorkas Over Handling of Border

Impeachment Trial to Kick Off at 1 pm Today

The US Senate voted on Wednesday to end the impeachment case against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. The vote was 55-45, with all Republicans and 48 Democrats voting to end the case. Two Democrats, Sens. Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona, voted with the Republicans.

The impeachment proceedings against Mayorkas began in the House of Representatives, where he was impeached by a vote of 214 to 213 on Tuesday night. The charges against Mayorkas stemmed from his handling of the border crisis, which has seen a surge in illegal immigration and drug trafficking in recent months.

The impeachment trial in the Senate was set to begin at 1 pm today. All 100 senators will be sworn in as jurors in the trial, which is expected to last several days.

The White House has called the impeachment of Mayorkas an "unconstitutional impeachment stunt." In a statement, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said that the impeachment was "a politically motivated attack on a dedicated public servant who has been doing his job to keep our country safe."
