Deaton Wins GOP Primary to Face Warren in November

Close Race Ends With Deaton Victorious

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Former state Rep. Ed Deaton has won the Republican primary for governor in Maine, setting up a general election matchup with Democratic Gov. Janet Mills.

Deaton defeated three other candidates in Tuesday's primary, including former Gov. Paul LePage.

Warren has been in office since 2019 and is seeking a second term.

Deaton's Victory Speech

In his victory speech, Deaton said he was "honored and humbled" to have won the primary.

"I want to thank the people of Maine for putting their trust in me," he said.

"I promise to work hard every day to make Maine a better place for all of our citizens."

The General Election Matchup

The general election matchup between Deaton and Mills is expected to be competitive.

Mills is a popular incumbent, but Deaton is a well-known and respected figure in Maine politics.

The election will be held on November 8, 2023.
